Kerala’s Arabian Sea coastline includes busy resort beaches, fishing villages, long open stretches, dramatic cliffs, and beaches connected to historic towns. Kovalam and Varkala are well-known, but Bekal, Kannur, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, and Malappuram each offer different scenery and travel experiences.

South Kerala

Kovalam is convenient for visitors who want established accommodation, restaurants, and easy access from Thiruvananthapuram. Varkala is known for its laterite cliff, sunset views, and the beach below; the cliff area has shops and cafes, while the shore requires a descent and should be approached with care during rough sea conditions.

Poovar and nearby coastal areas provide a quieter setting where the river, estuary, and sea meet. Always follow lifeguard directions, avoid swimming alone, and remember that a calm-looking beach can have strong currents.

Central and northern Kerala

Alappuzha and Marari are useful for travelers combining a beach visit with backwaters. Kozhikode Beach is closely tied to the city and its food culture. Kannur offers a mix of beaches, forts, and Theyyam traditions, while Bekal is known for the large fort overlooking the sea.

Muzhappilangad is associated with drive-on beach experiences, but access rules, vehicle conditions, tides, and local restrictions can change. Confirm the current rules before driving onto any beach, and never take a vehicle into areas marked for pedestrians or nesting wildlife.

Beach etiquette and timing

October to March is often comfortable for beach travel, while the monsoon can produce dramatic surf and lush scenery but less predictable swimming conditions. Early morning and late afternoon are cooler and better for walking. Keep valuables secure, carry drinking water, and take all plastic and food waste back with you.

A beach is part of a living coastal community. Respect fishing equipment, local customs, quiet residential areas, and photography boundaries. Supporting local cafes, guides, and small businesses is a better way to experience the coast than treating it as a disposable stop on a checklist.
